蜜ろうを造形の原型として用いる技術は、1000年以上前、仏教装飾の技術伝来とともに日本に伝わり受け継がれ、発展してきました。
私たちHANAno・ともやすアンドカンパニーは、50年以上にわたり蜜ろうによる造形でジュエリーを制作することを日々の仕事として続けてきました。
蜜ろうのつくり方や扱い方、造形に適した環境づくりまで、長年の経験によって培われた技術が、HANAnoのアトリエで手から手へと受け継がれています。

HANAno History

The art of using wax as a model for lost-wax casting was introduced to Japan more than 1,000 years ago,
alongside the techniques of Buddhist ornamentation.
Over centuries, the knowledge was passed down, refined, and developed into a uniquely Japanese tradition.

At HANAno, part of Tomoyasu & Co., we have spent more than 50 years making jewelry through the art of working with Mitsuro.
From preparing and handling the material itself to creating the ideal environment for shaping it, the knowledge and
skills cultivated through decades of experience are passed from hand to hand in the HANAno atelier.

At the heart of our creative practice is Mitsuro Hikime.

By warming Mitsuro and stretching it by hand, we create natural, flowing lines and organic patterns.
No two expressions can ever be exactly the same, nor can every detail be completely controlled.

This is why we do not simply look at the form of the Mitsuro itself. From the very beginning,
we imagine the finished piece as it will appear once cast in metal.

With the final form in mind, we draw beautiful Hikime lines, gently shaping curves with our fingertips,
wrapping the material around a mandrel to introduce twists, and carefully adjusting its width, length, and thickness by hand.
In this way, the form gradually becomes a piece of jewelry.

Simply leaving the process to chance and finishing whatever form happens to emerge from Mitsuro Hikime is not,
in our view, the act of designing jewelry.

It is when the patterns born through chance meet the intention of the maker that a piece of jewelry comes to life.

The beauty of Mitsuro Hikime lies in its organic, flowing curves—forms that cannot be expressed
in the same way through any other technique.

For us, the beauty of the Hikime created in Mitsuro is an essential condition
for creating a simple and beautiful piece of jewelry in silver or other metals.

We carefully consider how the Mitsuro Hikime reflects the image we have envisioned,
how fully its beauty can be brought to life, and how it integrates with the weight, comfort, balance, and
functionality of the finished piece.

Only when all of these elements come together does it become a piece of jewelry.

The form created in Mitsuro is cast directly into silver.

Freshly cast silver has a pure, luminous white surface.
We carefully refine each piece so that neither the brightness of the metal nor the delicate lines of the Hikime are compromised,
while ensuring that the finished jewelry is safe and comfortable to wear.

Light and shadow are then brought to life through the final finishing process.
Using a spatula, we work the surface as though painting a picture or writing with a brush, carefully shaping the relationship
between light, shadow, and the lines of the Hikime.

What we value above all is:

Not all of our jewelry is created through Mitsuro Hikime.
For every piece, however, we carefully select the most appropriate materials and apply our finishing techniques without compromise.

Rather than dividing the process among different specialists,
a single craftsman takes responsibility for each piece from beginning to end.
Through this continuous relationship between the maker, the material, and the work itself,
every piece develops its own individual character—and we are able to send each one into the world with confidence.

We hope our jewelry will be chosen by those who seek to wear things that hold personal value to them
—objects that feel beautiful, meaningful, and comfortable to live with.

This is our wish, and it is the foundation of our approach to making.
